Greg Patton is a native South Carolinian, born in Charleston and raised in Travelers Rest. His work is inspired by the decorated stoneware and face jugs of 19th-century Edgefield, SC pottery. He works with traditional elements of this style, including ash glazes and slip decoration. Greg also draws ideas from the tradition of pottery throughout the Southeast, incorporating and reinterpreting old themes to create a mixed body of work: some would be at home alongside historical Edgefield pieces, and some appear quite contemporary.
Greg graduated from Furman University in 2001 with a degree in art, and has supported himself as an artist since. His workshop is in Travelers Rest, a small town north of Greenville, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of upstate South Carolina.
